I am Ashar, an abstract painter inspired by the wide-open spaces and big skies of the Somerset Levels and moors. My art is a record of my feelings and emotions for the places and moments that move me. Rather than depicting landscapes literally, I strive to express the atmosphere and spirit of a place—inviting you into an inner world that reaches beyond the material and into the psyche.
My paintings are often described as atmospheric, emotional, and moving. Through mark-making—scratches, strokes, and gestures—I seek to connect with you, the viewer, and evoke a genuine response. My goal is for you to feel, rather than understand my work.
Each winter, I wander the moors and levels, sketching and absorbing the essence of my surroundings. These sketches become the foundation for my studio practice, where I spend hours mixing oils to achieve the palette that best expresses my emotional response to each subject.
Since earning my BA (Hons) from Plymouth University, I have continually challenged and refined my practice, always seeking new ways to capture the freedom and essence of the landscapes I love.
